Private tutor in White Rock, Canada

Education

I graduated from a French university in Quebec with a major in ESL and minor in secondary education. I studied French and Spanish at UBC prior to moving to Quebec to continue my language studies. I have taken Orton Gillingham courses as Barton courses for teaching reading and spelling to dyslexic students. In addition to my B.Ed., I have a certificate in technical writing from SFU, courses in speech writing and document creation for computer systems and procedures. While working as a technical writer, I took numerous courses in best writing practices for the web, including the internationally recognized Infomapping course. I am 4 courses short of a certificate in Human Resource management from BCIT.

Experience

I have tutored French and ESL students of all ages for more than 30 years in the Lower Mainland. Prior to becoming a private tutor, I taught ESL to adults for over 10 years for the Richmond school board. After leaving my teaching job, I worked as a technical writer for 18 years creating clear and concise end user documentation for mainframe computer systems. I am currently accepting new students who need help with their English, and French grammar and pronunciation. I also look forward to tutoring dyslexic students of all ages to help them to improve their spelling or reading. I have developed games to teach most elementary and middle-school subjects using hands-on and visual elements so they are accessible to all learners. I am currently engaged part time teaching elementary school aged learners with dyslexia. Essentially regardless of what I am teaching, I want my students to be comfortable in expressing themselves freely and enjoy their learning. I hope to inspire them to explore further what we study and more. I adapt my lessons to the needs of each of my students to help them reach their goals.

Hobbies

In addition to loving languages and working with my students, I am an avid reader and have an interest in a broad number of subjects, in particular, current events, history and languages. I enjoy travelling and soaking up the culture and history of the places I visit. I have worked as a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, the United Way, the Learning Disabilities Association of Surrey, Options and Progressive Intercultural community Services (PICS).
